GameStop in Topsham to Close, Shifting Local Retail Landscape
GameStop announced Jan. 5 that its Topsham store at Topsham Crossing will close, though no specific closing date was given. The announcement adds to a recent run of retail exits in the region, affecting mall foot traffic and local hobby communities while some customers are already planning a move to nearby Midcoast Comics.

GameStop notified customers on Jan. 5, 2026 that the Topsham store at Topsham Crossing, 127 Topsham Fair Mall Rd., will be closing, joining a string of recent retail departures across southern Maine. The chain did not provide a final closing date. The store manager posted on Facebook inviting customers to stop by before the doors shut and to share memories: "You’ve made this store more than just a place to shop; you made it a community. Please stop in before we close to say hello, share memories, and check out our remaining inventory. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of our journey."
The announcement has particular currency for local collectors and gamers. The manager said Pokémon Trainers will be moving to Midcoast Comics on Pleasant Street in March, signaling an informal migration of a hobbyist community and some inventory to an independent shop. That relocation may preserve parts of the social and commercial activity tied to card and game events, while shifting it away from the mall complex.

Sagadahoc County shoppers and the Topsham Crossing property face the practical effects of another vacancy in a retail cluster already feeling pressure. Recent weeks have seen several notable retail exits in the region, including the closure of Renys in downtown Portland, the planned end-of-January closing of Bull Moose’s North Windham store, and the shutdown of Hub Furniture in Westbrook after more than 50 years in business. Local small businesses have announced additional closures, creating a broader pattern altering foot traffic, leasing dynamics, and the mix of goods and services available to nearby residents.
For local policymakers and commercial landlords, these closures underscore tightening conditions in brick-and-mortar retail. Vacancies can reduce mall draw and complicate efforts to attract new tenants, while the consolidation of niche communities into independent shops or online channels may lower in-person engagement. For customers, the immediate impacts are practical: fewer in-person shopping options at Topsham Crossing and a likely concentration of specialized hobby events at other independent businesses such as Midcoast Comics.
As the timing of the Topsham GameStop’s final day remains unspecified, customers and community members who value the store as a gathering place are being encouraged to visit before it closes. The move highlights a continuing local transition in retail that will influence shopping patterns, commercial property planning, and community gathering spots in the months ahead.
