A person was found dead beside one of San Francisco’s most heavily used freeway access points late Sunday, turning a routine weekend closure on eastbound Interstate 80 into a fresh public-safety investigation at Harrison and Seventh streets.

The California Highway Patrol found the body near the Harrison Street and Seventh Street on-ramp around 11:35 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2026. Investigators have not released the person’s name, age or any other identifying details.

CHP said foul play does not appear to have been involved. A spokesperson also said the death appeared “to be a death possibly related to a drug overdose,” but authorities have not said whether that determination came from the scene, witness accounts or an early medical assessment.

The discovery came just after Caltrans finished weekend repair work on eastbound I-80 in the area. The freeway reopened around 11 p.m. Sunday, about seven hours ahead of schedule, after a two-day closure tied to a larger rehabilitation project on the Central/Bayshore freeway viaducts. That project began in January and is expected to continue for two years.

The location matters because Harrison and Seventh is not an isolated corner. It is a direct on-ramp to eastbound I-80, a key route for commuters, delivery traffic and anyone trying to leave the city toward the East Bay and beyond. Any emergency, police activity or closure at that point can quickly ripple through nearby streets and affect drivers already navigating the freeway work.

Authorities have not said whether the death was connected in any way to the construction zone, the reopened ramp or traffic conditions around the viaduct project. They also have not released whether the person was found on the roadway, shoulder or nearby embankment, leaving open questions about how long the body had been there before officers arrived.

For now, the case remains open, with the California Highway Patrol continuing to investigate what happened at the edge of a major San Francisco freeway connector just as the weekend work wrapped up.
