A man was found unconscious and died Saturday evening inside a building on the 3900 block of Mission Street, near College Avenue, after San Francisco Fire Department units responded alongside Pacific Gas and Electric crews to investigate what the department described as "a possible gas odor or possible gas leak."

Fire department units were dispatched at about 6:15 p.m. to the address, near the St. Mary's Park neighborhood, at PG&E's request. "Upon entering the building, a civilian was discovered receiving medical attention but passed away on scene," the fire department said. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the man was the only person at the scene in need of emergency care. The gas leak, if confirmed, appeared to be isolated to the building.

PG&E had requested the fire department's assistance not only at that address but in gaining access to several nearby homes as the utility investigated the source of the odor. SFFD, SFPD, and PG&E remained on scene to investigate.

The man's identity was not released. The San Francisco Police Department said foul play was not suspected, though the exact manner of death was not immediately known. No coroner or medical examiner findings had been released as of Saturday evening, and it remains unconfirmed whether carbon monoxide poisoning or another gas-related cause was responsible.

The incident is being jointly investigated by the San Francisco Fire Department, the San Francisco Police Department, and PG&E. Some outlets reported the address as falling within Bernal Heights, though the street address of 3934 Mission St. and its proximity to College Avenue correspond more closely to the St. Mary's Park area; the discrepancy has not been officially resolved.
