Bloomfield sweeps District 1-4A track titles, heads to state strong
Bloomfield won both District 1-4A titles at Kirtland Central, led by Evani Velasquez and Andrew Himes, and heads to state with a deep core.
Bloomfield turned District 1-4A into a statement meet at Kirtland Central High School, sweeping both team titles and showing the kind of depth that can carry the Bobcats into state contention. The boys won with 152 points, outpacing host Kirtland Central’s 134, while the girls held off Aztec 125.5 to 121.5 in a race that stayed tight until the final scoring.
The girls title was built around Evani Velasquez, who delivered one of the meet’s most complete performances. She won the 100-meter dash in 12.36 seconds, the 200 in 25.95 and the 400 in 1:03.37, giving Bloomfield scoring across sprint and middle-distance events. Ryli Heckman added wins in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.82 and the high jump at 5 feet, and Renee Himes gave the Bobcats another boost by winning the pole vault at 8 feet and placing second in the 300 hurdles.
Bloomfield’s boys matched that level of production with a roster that spread points across the track and field. Andrew Himes was the central scorer, winning the 110 hurdles in 14.96, the 300 hurdles in 42.56 and the triple jump at 42 feet, 5 inches. Donavin Mickas took the 200 in 23.01, Markeith Childress won the long jump at 20 feet, 1 inch, and Paxton Morris cleared 5 feet, 11 inches to win the high jump.

Aztec kept the girls race close behind strong field-event work from Kamber Martin, who won both the shot put at 34 feet, 1 inch and the discus at 107 feet, 7 inches. Alisia Valerio also added a district title for the Tigers, winning the triple jump at 36 feet, 1.25 inches. Miyamura, Shiprock and Gallup also fielded teams in the district meet.
The sweep sends Bloomfield to the Class 4A state championships at the UNM Track-Soccer Complex in Albuquerque on May 15-16 with momentum and a proven core. Andrew Himes already owns a strong state résumé, winning the 110 hurdles and triple jump at the 2025 Class 4A meet and finishing second in the 300 hurdles. Bloomfield’s boys and girls teams both finished fifth at state last year, so this district showing gives the Bobcats a chance to climb higher. The result also followed a sweep at the 2026 Bloomfield Invitational, underscoring that Bloomfield’s track program is peaking at the right time.
