Chavarria's Defensive Surge Lifts Bloomfield Past Aztec 60-42
Manuel Chavarria's late defensive surge keyed Bloomfield's 60-42 district-opening win over Aztec, strengthening a local rivalry and impacting district standings.

Manuel Chavarria's defensive surge in the final minutes propelled Bloomfield past Aztec, 60-42, in the District 1-4A opener at Lillywhite Arena. The Bobcats improved to 9-8 overall and 1-0 in district play, while the Tigers fell to 2-15 and 0-1.
Bloomfield built an early lead behind Marcus Garcia, who drilled two 3-pointers in the opening minutes to counter a triple from Aztec senior Christian Jacquez. The first quarter ended 16-10 in Bloomfield's favor as junior Elijah Cooks contributed seven points. Bloomfield led 26-18 at halftime after senior Kaydin Nelson scored six in the second quarter and finished the half with a three-point play.

Scoring slowed in the third quarter. Turnovers hindered Bloomfield's offense while Jacquez carried Aztec, scoring seven of the Tigers' nine points in the frame. Momentum swung when Chavarria stole the ball and fed sophomore Cameron Ford, and Nelson's block on junior Braylon Phillips set up a 3-pointer by sophomore Keyshawn Woolboy. Bloomfield went into the fourth up 40-27.
Aztec rallied in the fourth, exploiting Bloomfield foul trouble after Nelson picked up his fourth foul with 6:41 remaining. Aztec made 7-of-13 free throws in the period and Jacquez completed a three-point play that cut the deficit to 46-40 with just under three minutes left. At that point the game tightened, and the rivalry's intensity was on full display.
Bloomfield assistant coach Jacob Feil, who filled in for head coach Dominique Richardson, reflected on the physical district matchup: “The Aztec district rivalry came out. We knew it wasn’t going to be pretty all the time, as some district games are, but the boys came through when we needed it most.”
With Nelson fouled out, Chavarria took over defensively. He recorded three steals and two assists in the closing minutes, including an assist to Cooks and a coast-to-coast drive that added an offensive punch. Chavarria summed up the team approach and coaching philosophy: “Coach Richardson preaches ‘next man up’ every week. We’re a defensive-minded team, so our defense turns into offensive points. When we’re doing that, we’re at our best.”
Junior Elijah Cooks finished with a game-high 15 points for Bloomfield and Garcia added 10. Jacquez led Aztec with 19 points. The quarter-by-quarter scoring read Tigers 10, 8, 9, 15 - 42 and Bobcats 16, 10, 14, 20 - 60.
The result continues Bloomfield's dominance in the rivalry, spanning a 12-1 record against Aztec over the past six seasons, and avenges last season's 66-59 loss to the Tigers in the finale. Bloomfield now heads into a road-heavy district slate, opening at Shiprock at 7 p.m., while Aztec travels to Miyamura on Friday. For local fans, the outcome reshapes early district seeding and underlines Bloomfield's defensive identity as the season moves into the district grind.
