Three San Juan County Athletes Sign Letters of Intent for College Sports
Bloomfield's Lyla Snell-Martinez and two Kirtland Central seniors signed college letters of intent Wednesday, sending local soccer and football talent to Texas, New York, and Iowa.
Lyla Snell-Martinez, a Bloomfield senior who played through a season-altering injury to close out her prep career with 19 goals in 76 appearances, signed a letter of intent with the University of Dallas on Wednesday, committing to play soccer for the Crusaders. Two Kirtland Central classmates signed the same day, giving San Juan County three college-bound athletes in a single afternoon.
Snell-Martinez's four years at Bloomfield included two state-tournament appearances and a prior season in which she led the Bobcats with 34 steals. Her scoring numbers climbed progressively through high school, making her commitment to the Crusaders a product of consistent development rather than a single standout season.
Across town at Kirtland Central, Shilynn Morgan signed with Bryant & Stratton College in Albany, New York, where she plans to play soccer while pursuing a nursing degree. Morgan scored 27 career goals for the Broncos, including 13 in her final season, and played a central role in a team that finished 9-9-1. Her commitment carries her further from the Four Corners than any of the three signers.

Kayben Dowdy, the second Kirtland Central senior to sign Wednesday, committed to Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, to play football. His signing extends a recent pattern at Kirtland Central of producing players who move on to collegiate programs.
Coaches at both schools pointed to leadership and resilience as the traits that carried all three athletes to signing day. For Snell-Martinez, who worked back from a senior-year injury to reach the ceremony, the path to Dallas required exactly that.
