Defending Champion Gallup Hosts No. 1 Kirtland Central in Rivalry Showdown
Gallup hosted Kirtland Central in a high-stakes Class 4A rivalry on Jan. 20, a matchup that will shape district seeding and local bragging rights across San Juan County.
A high-stakes Class 4A rivalry carried major postseason implications when Gallup welcomed Kirtland Central to town for a Thursday night showdown that dominated local attention. Both programs entered the contest at 14-2, ranked among the state’s elite and competing for position in the District 1-4A race that will help determine NMAA tournament seeding.
Kirtland Central arrived as MaxPreps 4A No. 1 while Gallup sat at No. 2 in that poll; the coaches poll flipped those positions, listing Gallup first and Kirtland Central second. Each team received 10 first-place votes in the coaches poll. Across all New Mexico schools, MaxPreps positions both programs near the top with Kirtland Central and Gallup at No. 2 and No. 5 respectively. Statistical season marks further underline the balance: Kirtland Central has scored 1,041 points with 619 points against, while Gallup has produced 994 points and allowed 559.
The matchup is the latest chapter in a rivalry that stretches back through decades of regional competition. Kirtland Central holds 21 state championships overall and leads the series 25-20 since 2007. The teams have met 20 times since the 2021 season, with Kirtland winning 12 of those meetings but falling in the last two contests, including the Bengals’ state title-clinching 51-41 win last March at the Pit in Albuquerque. Gallup’s recent state crowns include 2021, 2023 and 2025, while Kirtland Central captured titles in 2022 and 2024.

Kirtland Central head coach Devon Manning emphasized perspective on the long season: "The records don’t matter at this point," said Kirtland Central head coach Devon Manning. "We’re all 0-0 at this point of the season. The preseason games, you’re trying to set yourself up to be in the state tournament, but the district season decides the seeding. We know we’ve got a gauntlet coming up these next ten games but we’re ready for it."
The local stakes extend beyond rankings. With the schools separated by roughly 110 miles, the rivalry fuels travel, community turnout and youth interest across both districts. Boosters, student sections and feeder programs treat matchups like Thursday’s as talent showcases and recruitment moments for the postseason push. For Gallup and Kirtland Central, district positioning will influence path and potential matchups in March’s bracket when the NMAA releases seedings.
For San Juan County fans, Thursday’s game was another measuring stick in a season that promises intense district play and familiar championship aspirations. As district play continues and the NMAA reveals postseason brackets, both programs will focus on sustaining form, managing travel and turning rivalry intensity into playoff readiness.
