Deswood, Yazzie win first Diné doubles title in Farmington history
Marley Deswood and Hannah Yazzie made Farmington High history, winning the first Diné doubles title and giving San Juan County a new Native milestone.
Marley Deswood and Hannah Yazzie turned Farmington High’s latest tennis run into a historic first, capturing the New Mexico Class 5A girls doubles title and becoming the first Diné doubles champions in school history.
The No. 2 seed in the bracket, Deswood and Yazzie gave Farmington its best shot at a girls doubles crown at the 2026 NMAA State Tennis Championships, which opened Wednesday at the Jerry Cline Tennis Center in Albuquerque. Their title added another line to a program that had already built a reputation as one of the strongest in Class 5A, and it carried special weight for Native students and families watching a pair of Diné athletes reach the top together.
Farmington entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the girls team race after winning the 2025 Class 5A state championship. The Lady Scorps have now added to a program record that Tri-City Record said includes eight state titles, underscoring how often Farmington tennis has stayed in the championship conversation.
Deswood was no stranger to the state stage. In 2023, she and Naomi Beck, both Diné players, finished as Class 5A doubles reserve champions after falling to La Cueva 6-3, 6-3 in the final. Deswood said then that the experience made her feel confident she could win a state championship in future years, and that confidence carried into this spring’s run with Yazzie.

Deswood’s numbers from the 2025 season showed why Farmington kept leaning on her in big moments. She finished the regular season 17-1 in singles and 17-1 in doubles, then helped lead the team to its state title. This year, coach Pat McGrath said Yazzie was serving very well and Deswood was reading the court very well and placing the ball in the right spot.
For Farmington, the doubles championship was more than another trophy. It put two Diné athletes at the center of a school record and gave San Juan County a visible reminder of how far Native tennis players have come inside one of New Mexico’s most successful girls programs.
