Daniel Austin's 20-foot, 8.5-inch long jump at Hutchison Stadium on Saturday was just the opening act. The Farmington High relay quartet of Austin, Marcus Peters, Dayton Bizzell and Canton Cahoon swept all three relay titles at the FHS Invitational, driving the Scorpion boys to the team championship while Piedra Vista's girls edged Farmington to claim the other half of a split-school result.

The relay core ran 42.93 in the 4x100 and 1:29.32 in the 4x200, then closed the meet with Quentin Begay stepping in for Bizzell for a 3:33.48 in the 4x400. Running essentially the same four athletes across all three relay events in a single afternoon, Farmington's squad made the case that its sprint depth is among the strongest in the Four Corners.

The distance corps filled in the rest of the scoring gap. Cache Webb won the 3,200 meters in 10:11.54 and Dean Webb took the 800 in 2:15.73, giving the Scorpions a combined sweep of relays and middle-distance events that few programs in the field could answer.

Piedra Vista's girls answered through individual depth in the distance events. Dante Krakow's 4:27.89 in the 1,600 meters was the signature performance of the girls' competition. Honor Robinson added a win in the 800 in 2:22.72 and Yara Jaramillo took the 3,200 in 12:36.57, giving the Panthers three distance titles and enough accumulated scoring to edge Farmington for the girls' team crown.

Bloomfield's Andrew Himes made a separate statement outside the team battles, sweeping the hurdles events and winning the triple jump. The Bobcats' multi-event showing confirmed that the competition at the top of San Juan County track runs deeper than a two-school race.

With district meets arriving in April and May, Saturday's results at Hutchison function as something closer to a forecast than a formality. Farmington's relay depth makes the Scorpion boys difficult to dislodge, and Piedra Vista's distance trio gave the Panthers a blueprint for keeping that girls' title margin alive through the rest of the spring.
