Farmington schools earn NAMM music education honor for 10th year

Farmington Municipal Schools said on April 23, 2026, that it had once again been named a Best Community for Music Education by The NAMM Foundation, extending a streak that reached 10 straight years. The recognition is now displayed across district webpages, including Farmington High School and Esperanza Elementary School, where music education is presented as a districtwide point of pride.

The award carries more than a ceremonial label. NAMM said its Best Communities for Music Education program was in its 27th year in 2026, after Farmington appeared on the foundation’s 2025 list of 935 school districts nationwide during the program’s 26th year. NAMM says the honor goes to districts that show commitment to music education and equitable access for all students as part of a well-rounded education.

That access depends on more than a logo on a webpage. Farmington Municipal Schools’ public job listings show the district is still staffing for music instruction. The New Mexico Music Educators Association lists a full-time elementary general music position for grades K-5 in Farmington, with applicants expected to hold a bachelor’s degree and a valid New Mexico teaching license with endorsements as needed.

For families in San Juan County, the practical test is whether that recognition translates into stable offerings at each school, from elementary general music to higher-grade opportunities at campuses such as Farmington High School. The district’s repeated appearance on NAMM’s list, combined with the open music teacher posting, shows that Farmington is continuing to recruit and promote music instruction rather than treating it as an afterthought.

The district first publicized the honor on May 13, 2025, and then again in 2026, when it said the streak had reached 10 years. In a district of Farmington’s size, the question now is less whether the schools can win the badge again than whether the staffing behind it stays strong enough for the next school year.
