With the holiday pause behind them, San Juan County's high school athletes returned to competition this week, as regular-season basketball tournaments and several wrestling invitationals filled gymnasiums across the region. The calendar includes local teams competing in multi-school events that offer both competitive opportunity and community gatherings important to small towns throughout the county.

Kirtland Central's girls program is entered in the Albuquerque Public Schools Metro Tournament, while Navajo Prep will send both boys and girls teams to the Santa Fe Indian School Invitational. Piedra Vista's boys program is slated for the Gallup Invitational. Those tournaments, together with a full slate of home-and-away league games, mark a dense stretch of midseason play that can affect postseason seeding and player development.

Weeknight conference play resumes with a full Tuesday lineup: Shiprock travels to Bayfield at 5:45 p.m., Grants visits Farmington at 7 p.m., Aztec faces Piedra Vista at 7 p.m., and Kirtland Central meets Navajo Prep at 7 p.m. On Thursday, Navajo Prep will meet Tularosa at 11:30 a.m. in Santa Fe, Piedra Vista plays Española Valley at 6 p.m. in Gallup, and Shiprock Northwest goes to Walatowa Charter at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday will bring tournament sessions with times to be announced, plus non-tournament games including Newcomb at Kirtland Central, Aztec at Bayfield, Shiprock at Farmington and Zuni at Bloomfield.

Girls teams opened their week with Newcomb at Shiprock on Monday, and schedules include Kirtland Central vs. Eldorado in the APS Metro Tournament, Bloomfield at Zuni, Farmington at Aztec and Navajo Prep's girls facing Tularosa in Santa Fe. The APS Metro Tournament will occupy multiple days this week, with several match times still to be determined. Saturday features Newcomb at Bloomfield at 12:30 p.m. and continued Metro Tournament play.

Wrestling competition also returns to the calendar with midweek and weekend invitationals. Miyamura High School will host the Crown the Queen tournament on Wednesday, while Saturday brings the Wingate Invitational at Wingate High School, the Sammy Vivian Invitational in Socorro and the Pinto Duals at Moriarty High School.

These events matter beyond scoreboard implications. For many San Juan County communities, high school athletics are focal points for social connection, student scholarship exposure and local identity. At the same time, rural and tribal schools often face travel costs, scheduling challenges and the strain of balancing competition with classroom time. Families and supporters should anticipate increased evening traffic at local schools and some longer trips for out-of-area invitationals.

Fans should check their schools' athletics pages for updates to TBA start times and any last-minute changes. With winter respiratory viruses circulating, attendees are encouraged to stay home if ill to protect teammates, coaches and community members who gather at these events.
