Khloe Schmidt, Jazzlyn Gomez lift Aztec past Bloomfield 36-27
Aztec beat Bloomfield 36-27 in the District 1-4A opener, a statement win that lifts Aztec into the district race and highlights how illness has affected local high school sports.
Aztec High School used late defensive pressure and timely turnovers to pull away for a 36-27 victory over Bloomfield in the District 1-4A opener Tuesday at Bobcat Arena. The win gives Aztec an 11-6 overall record and a 1-0 start in district play, while Bloomfield falls to 9-8 and 0-1.
From the opening tip the game was a grind, a defensive affair that reflected both teams’ attention to detail and the broader strain of illness on student athletes. Bloomfield shot 33 percent from the field and Aztec managed 25 percent, with both teams finding offense hard to come by. Aztec opened 6-2, but Bloomfield closed the quarter when Tasya Tyler hit a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 6-5.
Junior Khloe Schmidt led Aztec with 10 points and senior Jazzlyn Gomez added nine, pacing a Tigers roster that battled through health challenges. Coach Bill McLaughlin acknowledged the impact of sickness on the team’s shooting and energy. "We struggle from time to time with shooting," McLaughlin said. "We’ve been sick. (Gomez) has been deathly sick. We got a lot of good looks, it just unfortunately didn’t drop tonight."

Gomez provided a spark on both ends, disrupting an inbound pass in the second quarter and helping Aztec force 13 turnovers during that stretch. She converted two free throws in a late second-quarter sequence, and Schmidt followed with a 3-pointer to give Aztec a 14-8 halftime lead.
Bloomfield’s Delanna Russell kept the Bobcats within reach with a strong inside game, finishing with 12 points, and freshman Hayden Begay added a short jumper in the third. Junior Kamber Martin chipped in four points for Aztec, and senior Camila Dominguez finished with four points after consecutive steals in the final minute of the third to send Aztec into the fourth up 22-14. "I know what I’m going to get out of (Dominguez) defensive-wise," McLaughlin said. "She made the right steals and attacked the basket and gave us an opportunity to get up."
Aztec maintained distance early in the fourth before a Bloomfield run cut the margin to 28-24. Alisia Valerio then stole an inbound pass and scored, igniting a 6-0 run that sealed the outcome.
The game carries local significance beyond the scoreboard. It interrupts Bloomfield’s recent dominance in the rivalry and underscores how illness can affect youth sports schedules, player availability, and performance across San Juan County. With Aztec heading home to host Miyamura at 7 p.m. Thursday and Bloomfield traveling to Shiprock the same night, coaches and families will be watching health and conditioning as closely as the standings in the days ahead.
