Kirtland Central Girls Advance to 4A Title Game, Defeat Hope Christian 61-38
Kirtland Central forced 39 turnovers and held Hope Christian to 38 points, punching their ticket to a fifth straight Class 4A title game.
Kirtland Central's suffocating defense dismantled Hope Christian 61-38 in a Class 4A semifinal at The Pit on Thursday, sending the Broncos to the state championship game for a fifth consecutive year.
Four Broncos finished in double figures. Elaina Clani and Allyson Tsosie each scored 13 points, Haylee Nocki added 12, and Zoey Benally contributed 10. The offense was balanced, but it was the pressure defense that broke Hope Christian open. The Broncos forced 39 turnovers, racked up 29 steals, and converted 33 points off turnovers for the game, according to KRQE. Three KC players finished with at least five steals; Tsosie and Benally each tallied six, per the Tri-City Record.
Hope Christian kept it close early. Huskies junior Abrianna Bishop scored nine of her team's 11 first-quarter points, and Kirtland Central countered with balanced production from Nocki, Clani, and Tsosie to even the score at the first break. The Broncos then shifted into another gear in the second quarter. Clani, Tsosie, and Benally led the surge offensively while the defense intensified, generating 18 steals by halftime and converting 12 points off those turnovers. Kirtland Central carried a 29-19 lead into the locker room.
The second half was over almost before it began. Krista Tsingine-Yazzie opened the third quarter with a three-pointer to ignite an 11-0 run in the first three minutes. Nocki hit another three, and Tsosie drove for a basket to push the lead to 40-19. From there, Kirtland Central held firm and rolled to the 23-point final margin.
"That's what the veteran teams are supposed to do," head coach Devon Manning said. "They have to learn to communicate and support each other on the court and I think they've really improved at that aspect this year."

Thursday's win sets up the fourth meeting between Kirtland Central and Gallup this season, with the Broncos holding a 2-1 edge in those regular-season matchups. The championship game is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. at The Pit. Gallup, the defending state champion, reached the final with a 48-38 quarterfinal victory over Silver.
The stakes are well documented. Friday will mark the 49th all-time meeting between the two programs since 2007, with Kirtland Central holding a 27-21 edge in the series. But in state title games specifically, it is Gallup that has dominated: the Bengals are 3-0 against the Broncos in their three previous championship matchups since 2011, including last season's 51-41 win. Of Kirtland Central's 21 combined state championships since 1973, none have come against Gallup.
Manning acknowledged the magnitude plainly. "We're excited to be there and grateful for the opportunity to play in the final game."
The Broncos arrived at Thursday's semifinal having already dismantled the field. They opened the Class 4A tournament with a 61-40 win over Goddard, then routed Lovington 68-25 at The Pit on Tuesday, March 10. The path to Friday now runs through the program that has denied them in every title-game meeting they have shared.
