Kirtland Central Girls Basketball Claims 22nd State Title, Defeats Gallup 52-33
Sophomore Allyson Tsosie scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Kirtland Central claimed its 22nd Class 4A state title, routing Gallup 52-33 at The Pit.

Sophomore Allyson Tsosie delivered a game-high 17 points, 10 rebounds and six steals Friday night as the Kirtland Central Lady Broncos dismantled Gallup 52-33 before approximately 12,000 fans at the University of New Mexico's Pit, claiming the program's 22nd Class 4A state championship and finishing the season 29-3.
Junior Elaina Claini added 15 points for the No. 1-seeded Lady Broncos, who led 24-17 at halftime before pulling away decisively. Kirtland outscored Gallup 9-5 in the third quarter and then closed with a 19-11 fourth quarter to turn what had been a competitive first half into a rout.
Head coach Devon Manning pointed to defense and conditioning as the foundation of the win. "We felt pretty confident, as long as we were getting in defensive transition, we just liked our chances," Manning said. "They executed our game plan tonight. These are some awesome girls. I love them to death." He added elsewhere: "We pride ourselves on being the best-conditioned team on the court. We want to wear teams down. The girls don't always like the conditioning, but this is the payoff. We can outrun teams."
The victory carried particular weight inside the locker room. Kirtland had never beaten Gallup in a state championship game under Manning, making Friday's margin all the more pointed. Senior post Krista Tsingine-Yazzie, who had been part of that prior defeat on the same stage twelve months earlier, put it plainly: "We wanted it really bad today."
Senior Haylee Nocki hoisted the championship trophy at center court after the final buzzer, the image that captured a program still operating at the top of New Mexico girls basketball. Kirtland had gone three wins in four games against District 1-4A rival Gallup during the regular season, and the championship game made it four in five overall.

The Lady Broncos spent the season deliberately seeking out the toughest competition available, scheduling Class 5A opponents including Hobbs and Rio Rancho. Kirtland ended up facing three of the four 5A state semifinalists across the course of the year, a scheduling philosophy Manning credited with sharpening his team for exactly this kind of pressure moment.
The 22nd title adds another chapter to one of the most decorated programs in New Mexico high school sports. No girls basketball program in the state has won this class of championship more often, and Kirtland Central, a San Juan County school that has long defined expectations at the 4A level, showed no signs Friday night that the standard is slipping.
