Piedra Vista’s girls used depth to take the Scorpion Invitational at Piñon Hills Golf Course in Farmington, winning with a 381 and placing seven golfers in the top 10. The result gave the Panthers another strong marker in the San Juan County pecking order, even as Farmington High junior Olivia Silentman claimed the individual title.

The Panthers entered the event as the defending Class 5A champions, and the team score showed why they remain a postseason threat. Piedra Vista head coach Tom Yost said the Panthers are still not yet playing at state-level form and are short on tournament experience this season, but Monday’s finish suggested the gap is closing as district play approaches. In a county where one low round can swing everything, placing seven golfers near the top mattered more than a single standout score.

The boys race was even tighter. Aztec won the team title by one stroke with a 342, edging Farmington at 343 and Piedra Vista at 345 in a three-way battle that stayed alive until the final holes. That kind of margin underlined how little separates the county’s top programs heading into the stretch run, with Aztec, Farmington and Piedra Vista all showing they can contend on the same course, on the same day.

Aztec’s charge was led by Dylan Thompson’s 82, Natthan Kennedy’s 83 and Braylon Phelps’ 85. Piedra Vista sophomore Burke Allen and Kirtland Central’s Taylor Roundy shared medalist honors at 78, and Allen’s round included three birdies on the back nine. Farmington was led by freshman Lincoln Blue Eyes and senior Conner Neff, who each shot 82 and 83, while Joshua Johnson carded an 87 and Jonah Ledesma finished with a 91. Miyamura senior Zackery Maynerich also shot an 82 and helped the Patriots place fourth.

The girls result and the boys photo finish together offered a clear picture of the county hierarchy. Piedra Vista’s girls showed the kind of team depth that usually travels well into district and state play, while Farmington proved it still has an individual winner in Silentman. On the boys side, Aztec, Farmington and Piedra Vista all finished within three shots of one another, making Piñon Hills another reminder that San Juan County golf is being decided by thin margins and the ability to produce scores from more than one player.
