Piedra Vista sweeps Harry Hayes Invitational team titles in Bloomfield
Piedra Vista swept both team titles at Bloomfield High, led by Reuban Marquez, Robert Hess and a state-qualifying shot put from Kael Farley.
Piedra Vista turned the 21st Harry Hayes Invitational into a clear spring statement at Bloomfield High, sweeping both team titles in a meet that drew a dozen programs from across New Mexico. The Panthers girls won with 94 points, and the boys piled up six first-place finishes to control their side of the meet and underline how much depth the program has built.
Reuban Marquez drove much of the boys’ surge, winning the 100 and 200 meters and helping two relay victories. Robert Hess matched that punch with two wins of his own and shared the 100-meter spotlight when he tied Marquez at 11.20 seconds. In a meet where every sprint point mattered, that kind of duplication at the top is what pushed Piedra Vista away from the field.
The Panthers also got production outside the dash lanes. Kael Farley delivered one of the meet’s most important field-event results with a state-qualifying shot put of 49 feet, a sign that Piedra Vista’s success was not confined to raw speed. On the girls side, Honor Robinson added another key scoring swing with a win in the 400, giving the Panthers another first-place finish to go with their relay strength.
Coach Richard Gonzales said, “Everybody has bought into the program,” a line that fit the way Piedra Vista spread points across relays, sprints and field events instead of leaning on one standout. That balance matters now more than ever, with the New Mexico Activities Association postseason approaching and district competition tightening across the region.

The meet also offered a county-wide snapshot of who could factor down the stretch. Bloomfield’s Renee Himes won the 100-meter hurdles and pole vault, while D’Ante Morgan took the boys 400 and ran on Bloomfield’s winning 1,600 sprint medley relay team. Bloomfield head coach Steve Gutierrez said Andrew Himes was in only his third meet of the season as he worked back from a shoulder injury; Himes still won the 110 hurdles and ran on Bloomfield’s sprint medley relay team. Aztec’s Jake Roberts, the defending Class 4A pole vault state champion, cleared 13-7 for a personal record, topping his previous winning mark of 13-6.
Piedra Vista’s sweep carried extra weight because the Harry Hayes has been a reliable measuring stick for San Juan County track. In 2025, Piedra Vista’s girls won with 119 points while Bloomfield’s boys took the title with 107, and Andrew Himes swept three individual events plus a relay win. A year later, the Panthers left Bloomfield with both trophies and a deeper case that their best races may still be ahead.
