Spring sports enter stretch run, district races tighten in San Juan County
Piedra Vista’s showdown with Cleveland and a crowded 1-4A softball race now shape the clearest postseason paths in San Juan County.

Spring sports have taken over the calendar, and the next two weeks will decide which San Juan County teams stay in the hunt and which ones start playing for seeding. With baseball state championships set for May 6, 8-9 and 14-16, the race to the bracket is now down to district wins, tiebreakers and head-to-head games that can change travel plans and postseason paths in a hurry.
Piedra Vista remains one of the county’s biggest watch points after the Panthers went on the road April 5 to face Cleveland, the No. 1 team in the MaxPreps rankings, in a meeting of the top two baseball teams in New Mexico. That kind of matchup is a reminder that Piedra Vista is still operating at a level where every district result matters, especially as the regular season turns toward the final seeding push.
Softball is just as crowded. Three of the state’s top 10 Class 4A teams are in District 1-4A, with Aztec, Gallup and Kirtland Central all still in the same race. Gallup grabbed the early edge April 3 by blanking Kirtland Central 2-0 at Bronco Field, and Aztec now faces a busy week with games against Gallup and Kirtland Central that could shake up the top of the standings. Those are the kind of district games that can decide who is still playing in May and who is watching from home.
The 5A softball race also is far from settled. Piedra Vista entered April 11 at 14-6 overall and 2-2 in District 1-5A after falling to Rio Rancho 15-8 in a game that turned late. Farmington was hit just as hard the same day, losing to Cibola 12-2 in five innings. Farmington’s Annaleese Armstrong did double against Kirtland Central, but the Knights and Scorpions still need more consistent offense if they want to climb back into the district picture.
These crosstown and district matchups have mattered before. In 2024, Piedra Vista and Farmington softball were tied for second in District 2-5A heading into a late-season doubleheader, and in 2025 Piedra Vista baseball swept Farmington to close the regular season. That history makes the coming games more than just rivalry dates. In San Juan County, they are the moments that can redraw the bracket.
