San Juan County Teams Face Full District Basketball, Wrestling Schedule This Week
San Juan County teams played a full slate of district basketball games and hosted wrestling meets that shaped postseason positioning for local schools.
San Juan County high school athletics moved toward the district and state tournaments with a packed schedule of basketball matchups and two wrestling meets on Jan. 24 that gave teams critical chances to sharpen lineups and clarify seeding.
Boys basketball featured a string of district contests across the region, starting with Monument Valley at Shiprock and Zuni at Newcomb on Tuesday, both at 7 p.m. Navajo Prep visited Tohatchi the same night at 7 p.m. On Wednesday, Piedra Vista traveled to Cleveland at 7 p.m., Volcano Vista played at Farmington at 7 p.m., Aztec went to Shiprock at 7 p.m., Bloomfield faced Gallup at 7 p.m., and Miyamura visited Kirtland Central at 7 p.m. Thursday’s slate included Thoreau at Zuni, Newcomb at Wingate, and Crownpoint at Navajo Prep, each scheduled for 7 p.m.
Friday’s marquee games carried postseason implications: Bloomfield at Miyamura at 7 p.m., Piedra Vista at Rio Rancho at 7 p.m., Kirtland Central at Aztec at 7 p.m., Shiprock at Gallup at 7 p.m., and Farmington at Cibola at 7 p.m. Those matchups put Piedra Vista, Farmington, Aztec, Shiprock, Bloomfield, and Miyamura in positions to either consolidate district leads or chase improved seeds heading into tournament play.
Girls basketball also saw a busy week of district competition. Tuesday featured Gallup at Bloomfield at 6:30 p.m., Farmington at Volcano Vista at 7 p.m., Shiprock at Aztec at 7 p.m., Cleveland at Piedra Vista at 7 p.m., and Kirtland Central at Miyamura at 7 p.m. Wednesday brought Newcomb at Zuni at 6:30 p.m. and Tohatchi at Navajo Prep at 7 p.m. Thursday’s lineup included Miyamura at Bloomfield at 6:30 p.m., Gallup at Shiprock at 7 p.m., Cibola at Farmington at 7 p.m., Rio Rancho at Piedra Vista at 7 p.m., and Aztec at Kirtland Central at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday matched Newcomb and Wingate, Navajo Prep and Crownpoint, and Miyamura at Espanola Valley on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Wrestling added local depth to the weekend with two events hosted in the county. Piedra Vista High staged the Northern Nightmare meet on Saturday while Kirtland Central ran the Lady Bronco Invite the same day. Those events offered wrestlers from San Juan County and neighboring districts competitive mat time ahead of regional qualifying tournaments.
