SkillsUSA Regional Championship Strengthens Technician Pipeline in Four Corners
On Nov. 21 San Juan College hosted the SkillsUSA Regional Championship, drawing students from across the Four Corners to compete in automotive and diesel technology events. About 10 college and high school teams from New Mexico, Colorado and Utah tested hands on skills and written knowledge, connecting trainees with local industry professionals and reinforcing the county workforce pipeline.

San Juan College staged the SkillsUSA Regional Championship on Nov. 21, bringing together roughly 10 schools and teams from New Mexico, Colorado and Utah to compete in automotive and diesel technology contests. The event combined hands on stations and written tests aligned with ASE areas of automobile certification, and local industry professionals and advisory committees judged the competitions. For students the competition offered both skill validation and direct exposure to potential employers.
Contest formats mirrored industry expectations, requiring participants to demonstrate mechanical techniques under timed conditions as well as to complete written assessments that map to nationwide certification standards. That mix of practical and theoretical testing makes the results meaningful for local shops and dealerships searching for technicians who can step into entry level and mid level roles with less on the job training.

Local judges and advisory committee members staffed the event, using judging duties to scout talent and to advise schools on curriculum relevance. By hosting regional competitors San Juan College strengthened relationships between educators and employers, positioning the campus as a hub for workforce development in San Juan County. Industry involvement at the event underscored existing regional demand for qualified technicians and the importance of credentialed training to meet that need.
For the community the championship has several tangible implications. Employers gain a nearby pipeline of students already tested against ASE areas, which can shorten hiring lead times and reduce training costs. Students gain resume ready experience and networking access to local employers who directly observed their technical competencies. For San Juan County the event reinforces a local strategy of aligning postsecondary programs with labor market needs, supporting economic resilience by filling technical positions that sustain transportation and equipment reliant businesses.
As the Four Corners continues to balance workforce turnover and technological change in vehicle systems, events like the SkillsUSA championship play a practical role. They help translate classroom instruction into industry credentialing and employer connections, increasing the odds that local residents will find skilled, well matched job opportunities close to home.
