Ricketts Park, one of Farmington’s biggest baseball stages, saw Volcano Vista seize control of the District 1-5A race with a decisive 8-1 win over the Scorpions on Tuesday.

The Hawks got six sharp innings from senior Aaron Sanchez, who allowed one run on five hits and struck out seven. Volcano Vista coach Scott Brandt leaned into Sanchez’s consistency, calling him “Captain America” as the Hawks picked up their first district victory and improved to 10-9 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Volcano Vista did its damage early and kept adding to it. Evan Tafoya delivered an RBI double, Josiah Gurule and Josiah Gutierrez each added multi-run doubles, and Jason Sanchez broke the game open with a two-run home run in the second inning. That early burst forced Farmington to chase the game from behind and left the Scorpions trying to find answers against a Volcano Vista staff that kept the ball in the strike zone and limited traffic on the bases.

Farmington’s offense never found much rhythm. Calob Schofield was the clear bright spot, going 2-for-3 with an RBI single, but the Scorpions managed just one run as they dropped to 7-12 and extended their losing streak to six games. For a team trying to stay in the District 1-5A hunt, the loss was more than a one-night setback. It left Farmington still searching for its first district win and looking for a cleaner approach at the plate before the schedule tightens again.

The result also mattered because of where it happened. Ricketts Park is more than a home field for Farmington; it is one of the region’s signature baseball venues, a place that also hosts the Connie Mack World Series and routinely draws outsized attention for spring games. When district games turn one-sided there, the standings and the mood around the program tend to follow.

Volcano Vista’s first district win gave the Hawks a foothold as league play continues, with Cleveland next on the schedule. Farmington’s next chance to reset came against Cibola, a matchup that carried added pressure after an uneven start to district play.
