Urban Hotdog Co. turned a neighborhood favorite into a national title, beating 63 other hot dog shops across the country to win The64’s 2026 Best Hotdog in America competition.

The Albuquerque business survived six rounds of fan voting over 18 days to come out on top in the bracket-style tournament. Owner Matt Bernabe said the result felt “shocking and surreal,” and added, “We were definitely the underdogs.” The64 set up the contest as a public showdown for regional hot-dog pride, one matchup at a time, and Urban’s run gave Albuquerque a rare national food crown.

The victory carries extra weight because Urban Hotdog Co. and Clowndog Hot Dog Parlor were New Mexico’s only entries when voting began March 26. That put the state’s food identity on display against a nationwide field, and Urban’s win now gives New Mexico a loud, simple selling point: a local independent shop with a national title built on regional flavor.

That branding matters well beyond the city limits. A recognition like this can send diners from Sandoval County south to Albuquerque, especially to Urban’s Nob Hill location, which opened in late August 2023. For families in Rio Rancho, Bernalillo and Corrales looking for an easy food outing, a top-ranked hot dog joint adds another reason to cross the county line, spend money locally and see Albuquerque as more than a pass-through on the way to somewhere else.

Urban’s menu has long leaned into specialty dogs with New Mexican and global influences, and that mix helped make the restaurant stand out in a bracket full of better-known names. In a state where food identity is a major part of the brand, the win gives Albuquerque another economic and cultural bragging point, one that could help draw visitors, boost foot traffic and reinforce the idea that New Mexico flavors can compete anywhere in the country.
