A $2.7 million Florida Department of Transportation project at the intersection of State Road 436 and State Road 434 in Altamonte Springs is entering its final stretch, with FDOT estimating a Spring 2026 completion for work that began in Fall 2024.

The project, identified by FDOT as number 447411-1, covers a scope that includes replacing existing signal infrastructure with new mast arm signal poles, eliminating free-flow right-turn lanes, and placing all turning movements under signal control. Upgraded pedestrian crosswalks and signals, along with widened turn lanes, round out what FDOT describes as safety and operational improvements at one of the busiest intersections in Altamonte Springs.

Construction ramped up on March 9 when overnight lane closures began to allow crews to complete traffic signal work. For Russ Pilarski, who lives near the intersection, the overnight activity has made navigating the area a frustrating ordeal.

"At nighttime, it's terrible because it backs up for a half mile down the road," Pilarski said. "All the roads are cones. It's just hard to maneuver."

The city of Altamonte Springs has advised that low-profile barrier walls installed during construction are causing slight adjustments in lane widths, and that pedestrian detours are clearly marked with signage around the work zones. Motorists are urged to slow down while crews are on site.

The intersection work sits alongside a broader cluster of multimodal improvements the city is pursuing in the same corridor, including the Spring Lake Trail Project, which will run within existing city right-of-way historically used for utilities and maintenance, and the Altamonte SunRail Station Bicycle and Pedestrian Connectivity Improvements being built through a contract with Cathcart Construction.

Residents with questions about the project can contact Public Works Department Director Bruce Doig at (407) 571-8538, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. FDOT also maintains project files, detour maps, and a comment form on its project page for 447411-1.

Once complete, the reconfigured intersection is intended to deliver safer, more predictable movement for drivers and pedestrians alike at a crossing that carries heavy daily traffic along two of Seminole County's most traveled state roads.
