Crews kept a 2-acre wildfire near Lake Jessup from threatening homes or structures Saturday night, after smoke rose along the Sanford shoreline just south of Orlando Sanford International Airport.

Seminole County Fire Rescue and U.S. Forest Service personnel were called in around 6 p.m. and worked to build fire lines, apply water and foam where needed, and protect nearby sensitive areas. The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, ALERT 1, also responded and helped locate the fire after crews had established a perimeter.

By the night’s 9:03 p.m. update, the fire was under control and being monitored for hotspots, with no threat to life or property. Officials described it as a slow-moving wildfire, but said the cause was still unknown.

The small burn near Lake Jessup highlights how quickly fire can spread through brush and grass in Seminole County’s wooded edges, where neighborhoods, airport traffic and natural land sit close together. Even when flames stay relatively limited, smoke can reduce visibility on nearby roads and force crews to keep a close watch until every hotspot is cooled.

Florida’s fire agencies track those risks daily through statewide wildfire reports and Fire Readiness Levels, which are used to gauge conditions and guide burning authorization. The Lake Jessup response also fit a familiar pattern for the area, where another brush fire near the lake last July was estimated at 5 acres before officials said no homes or people were in danger.
