Winter Springs offers free cardboard drop off to deter thieves
The Winter Springs Police Department and Waste Pro launched a free cardboard drop off program to reduce post holiday burglaries, running from December 22, 2025 through January 2, 2026. The initiative gives residents a secure, round the clock option to dispose of packaging, and aims to limit the visible cues that can invite opportunistic theft.

The Winter Springs Police Department and private hauler Waste Pro opened a temporary drop off site to remove an easy target for thieves. From December 22 through January 2 residents may place cardboard packaging at a site next to the Winter Springs Police Department, 300 North Moss Road, Winter Springs, FL 32708. The dumpsters accept cardboard materials only and are available 24 hours a day at no cost.
Police officials framed the program as a simple crime prevention measure. Large boxes left at the curb can advertise recent purchases and provide a preview of what is inside a residence. Removing that visible cue reduces opportunities for opportunistic burglars and helps secure homes during a period when many households generate extra packaging waste.
The partnership with Waste Pro leverages municipal and private resources to provide a temporary service that is both public safety and environmental in nature. For residents who lack space to recycle oversize boxes or who want to minimize risks associated with curbside disposal, the drop off offers a practical option during the busy holiday window. The limited focus on cardboard streamlines operations and reduces contamination of the recycling stream.
Locally the program addresses two recurring concerns. First, it reduces an avoidable factor in property crime by removing advertising materials from view. Second, it provides a convenience to residents who otherwise might leave bulky packaging on lawns or at curbside, creating both a theft risk and a public nuisance. The initiative does not replace regular recycling services, but demonstrates how targeted, time limited actions can address seasonal spikes in theft risk.
From a policy perspective, the program illustrates how municipal law enforcement can work with private service providers to deliver preventive public safety measures at low cost. Officials should track burglary and trespass reports through the holiday period to assess whether the effort produces measurable benefits, and share results with the community to inform future efforts. In the meantime residents are encouraged to use the drop off at 300 North Moss Road and to follow standard home security practices.
