Ellendale Opera House Fund Drive Nears Goal, Seeks Year End Boost
The Ellendale Opera House fund drive announced Nov. 12 is closing Dec. 31 with a $125,000 goal, and organizers said the campaign stood at nearly $90,000 after a donor match. Reaching the target would fund naming opportunities and key restorations, with implications for downtown Main Street activity and future grant leverage.

The nonprofit that runs the Ellendale Opera House, O.P.E.R.A., Inc., confirmed on Nov. 12 that its 2025 "Gaining Momentum" Fund Drive is in the final stretch and aiming for a year end push to reach a $125,000 target. The campaign raised $30,000 by the end of August which triggered a dollar for dollar match from anonymous supporters. With the match and subsequent gifts, the drive has climbed to nearly $90,000, leaving roughly $35,000 to raise before the Dec. 31 deadline.
Donors may direct contributions toward specific naming and sponsorship opportunities, including the restored Annex, the upstairs auditorium, stage rehabilitation and the Main Street windows. All donors at every level will be permanently recognized on a plaque in the opera house lobby. Contributors of more than $300 between now and Dec. 31 will receive a newly designed O.P.E.R.A. mug. Gifts may be mailed to O.P.E.R.A., P.O. Box 334, Ellendale, ND 58436 or made online at ellendaleoperahouse.com.
The fund drive represents both a preservation effort and an economic development moment for downtown Ellendale. Renovations such as stage rehabilitation and window restoration are investments in the building as a venue, and improvements can directly affect the opera house ability to host performances, community events and rentals. For small Main Street businesses, increased events translate into higher foot traffic, additional evening and weekend spending, and an improved environment for attracting regional visitors.
From a financial perspective, the use of a matching gift effectively doubled early donations and appears to have accelerated subsequent giving. This pattern aligns with broader nonprofit fundraising trends where matched donations and year end campaigns concentrate charitable dollars in a short period. Meeting the $125,000 goal would also strengthen the case for future public or private grants, since many preservation funding programs weigh demonstrated local support and matching resources when awarding larger grants.
The campaign is a reminder of how local cultural assets can contribute to long term economic resilience in rural counties. Maintaining and upgrading historic performance spaces supports cultural tourism, creates venues for local talent, and can be a focal point for Main Street revitalization strategies. For Stutsman County residents who value community programming and downtown vitality, the remaining $35,000 needed is a tangible target that could shape the opera house role for years to come.
The drive was republished in the Jamestown Sun community section. Residents who wish to contribute have until Dec. 31 to participate in the campaign and receive recognition or donor incentives.
