A muddy minimum-maintenance road southwest of Elliott turned into a rollover scene Friday evening when a 2026 Polaris Ranger went out of control, overturned and injured five people, including a Lisbon man who was later airlifted to Fargo.

The crash happened at about 6:30 p.m. April 10 in the 12200 block of 71st Street SE, about 2.5 miles southwest of Elliott in Ransom County. According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the side-by-side was traveling westbound when the driver lost control, overcorrected and flipped the vehicle.

All five occupants were taken to CHI Lisbon Health. The driver, a 36-year-old man from Lisbon, was later flown to Fargo for treatment of serious injuries. He was reported to have been operating without a seat belt and was charged with driving under the influence.

Two adult women and two juvenile passengers were also aboard. One of the injured passengers was a 20-year-old woman from Valley City who was seriously hurt. Juvenile names will not be released.

The response brought together the North Dakota State Patrol, Ransom County Sheriff’s Office, Lisbon Fire Department, Lisbon Ambulance and Sanford AirMed. The Highway Patrol said the crash remains under investigation.

The wreck adds another hard lesson for riders heading into off-road season: snow, mud and minimum-maintenance roads can turn a routine trip into a rollover in seconds, especially when speed, impaired driving or lack of restraint compounds the risk. In this case, five people were hurt before the evening ended, and one driver had to be airlifted out of the region for more serious care.
