Jamestown residents should expect a one-day delay in garbage and recycling service next week after the city announced there will be no collection on Presidents Day. The Sanitation and Solid Waste Department said, "Due to the Presidents Day holiday, there will be no garbage or recycling collection on Monday, Feb. 16, according to the Sanitation and Solid Waste Department for the city of Jamestown. The Baling Facility and Recycling Center will be closed."

All routes will be delayed one day for the holiday week. "All routes will be delayed one day." Crews and facilities are scheduled to resume regular operations on Tuesday, Feb. 17. "City offices will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, Feb. 17." The one-day postponement follows the city’s established holiday collection policy: "If a holiday lands on your scheduled day, your collection schedule will be pushed back one day for both garbage and recycling."

Practical steps matter for residents who rely on weekly curbside service. The city requires that "Containers must be on the curb and ready for pickup before 7 am on the morning of your scheduled pickup day." Containers also must be accessible to trucks and kept "3 feet away from all objects, including mailboxes and your recycling containers." Drivers will not exit the truck to retrieve improperly placed items: "All garbage must be contained so the lid is closed or garbage may not be picked up. Drivers are not permitted to get out of trucks in any instance."

Recycling rules remain in effect during the holiday schedule change. Jamestown BPU reminds residents that recycling must be in a labeled bin and placed correctly; items left on the ground will not be collected. The Residential Recycling Credit Program requires residents to "always fill your assigned orange recycling bin first, each time you recycle, to earn a discount on your monthly solid waste bill." Note that shredded paper is no longer accepted in curbside recycling effective January 1, 2024, and glass was removed from curbside rotation effective January 1, 2021; glass may be taken to County Transfer Stations at no cost.

Residents with questions or service issues can reach the Baling Facility at 701-252-5223, recycling questions at 701-320-9218, or City Hall at 701-252-5900. Jamestown City Hall is located at 102 3rd Avenue SE, Jamestown, ND 58401. Recycle North Dakota lists regular Recycling Center hours as Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and Wednesday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, but cautions that hours "may change due to weather or holidays."

Plan ahead to avoid a missed pickup or a presidential pileup: move carts to the terrace after 4 p.m. the night before your adjusted pickup, place containers with the required clearances, and contact city services if a cart is missed, damaged, or lost. Regular collection and facility hours are scheduled to resume Tuesday, Feb. 17, returning the city to its normal weekly schedule.
