Jamestown Rural firefighters extinguish rural Courtenay fire, no injuries reported

A fire listed northwest of Jamestown drew Jamestown Rural firefighters into rural Courtenay, where two units and five firefighters responded to 1473 85th Ave. SE and extinguished the blaze with no injuries reported.

The response reflected the reach of a department that serves one of the largest fire districts in North Dakota. In Stutsman County, that means crews must cover long distances outside city limits, where farms, homes and roadways can be separated by miles and where a first alarm can quickly become a mutual-aid situation.

That pressure has been rising in dry conditions. In late April, Jamestown Rural had answered eight grass fires in three weeks, and five of those fires were accidentally started by individuals. The pattern has made simple prevention steps more important across the county, especially when grass dries out and wind can carry flames from one lot to the next.

The Courtenay fire was another reminder that rural response depends on speed, coordination and preparation. Around Jamestown, property owners can reduce risk by keeping dry grass away from buildings, watching equipment that can spark, and being careful with any activity that could ignite field stubble or roadside vegetation. In a district this large, prevention is often the difference between a small call and a much larger one.
