NDSU Master Gardeners will lead hands-on sessions in snail gardening and winter sowing with milk jugs at the Stutsman County Library on Friday evening, as the James River Valley Library System and the Stutsman County NDSU Extension office host the 2026 Seed Library Kick-Off starting at 6:00 p.m.

The event takes place at 910 5th St SE in Jamestown and is free and open to everyone in Stutsman County. Along with the gardening workshops, attendees can enjoy a free salad bar and hear from Stutsman County NDSU Extension Agent Ashley Kjellberg, who will explain what gleaning is and why it benefits the community.

Organizers are also running a food drive at the event: anyone who brings a canned vegetable will be entered into a prize drawing.

March 20 marks the first day of spring, and the kick-off is timed to open the gardening season for Jamestown-area residents. The James River Valley Library System, which operates the Alfred Dickey Library, the Stutsman County Library, and a bookmobile serving the county, has hosted similar seed library events in prior years. NDSU Extension Agent Ashley Kjellberg presented at the 2025 Seed Library Opening at the same location, making this year's kick-off a continuation of an established partnership between JRVLS and the Extension office.
