The James River Senior Center and Public Transit campaign announced on November 29, 2025 that it has raised $1 million toward a $2 million capital campaign goal for a renovation and expansion of the former IDK building at 1009 13th St. NE. Campaign chair Tena Lawrence reported that about 90 donors and community entities have contributed so far, and construction work is underway as the center aims to move into the new site in March when renovations are complete.

Organizers estimate total project costs at $2.8 million when accounting for prior funds already invested. The plan calls for two building additions, improved event space, more offices, additional restrooms and storage, a larger kitchen, and a west side garage to house a catering van and a walk in freezer. Those physical upgrades are intended to expand program capacity while improving accessibility, parking and safety for seniors and other community members.

For Stutsman County residents the significance is practical and wide reaching. James River Senior and Public Transit already logs tens of thousands of transit miles and provides both on site and home delivered meals across the region. A larger kitchen and dedicated vehicle storage will support meal preparation and delivery, while expanded event and office space will allow for more classes, health related programming and social activities that reduce isolation among older adults.

The project also touches on broader public health and equity concerns in rural communities. Reliable transportation is essential for medical appointments, pharmacy access and social service engagement, and expanded transit capacity can help address longstanding gaps in mobility for residents who lack private vehicles. Improved facilities and safer parking will ease access for people with mobility challenges and support caregivers who rely on local services.

Campaign leaders say fundraising continues as construction proceeds, with options available for donors who wish to contribute to completion of the project. The expansion represents an investment in local infrastructure that aims to strengthen community supports for aging residents, increase program reach and sustain essential transportation and nutrition services across the region.
