Two Jamestown Scouts earn Scouting's highest honor

Two Jamestown Scouts, including Alex Rutherford, reached Scouting's highest honor through years of rank advancement, leadership and service in Troop 163, the city’s only Scouting America troop.

The Eagle rank is not handed out for showing up. Scouting America’s Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook calls the service project the final step on the road to Eagle, and that capstone is meant to show planning, follow-through and public-minded leadership. In Jamestown, Eagle work has taken the form of practical improvements that leave something behind for everyone to use, including boardwalk repairs, a drain dug to move water more cleanly and mulch spread at a wildlife sanctuary.

That is why the honor lands as more than a badge ceremony. In a town where one troop carries the Scouting banner, the success of two Scouts reflects years of steady meetings, advancement and mentoring from adult leaders and family members. It also gives younger Scouts a visible path to follow: complete the requirements, lead a project and finish with something useful in the community, not just a line on a record.

Jamestown has seen other high-level youth honors this spring, including Kaeonna Radtke’s Girl Scout Gold Award for a park cleanup project, a reminder that service and leadership are still being built locally, one project at a time. For Troop 163, the latest Eagle achievement leaves behind more than recognition. It reinforces that Stutsman County still has a place where young people can learn how to lead by doing.
