Daniel Verbeke, 21, of Babylon died Saturday after his motorcycle left Wading River Road in Manorville and struck a boulder and a mailbox just south of Maple Lane, the latest fatality on a corridor that has claimed multiple lives in recent years.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:56 p.m. Emergency responders transported Verbeke to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead. No other vehicles were involved.

Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives are leading the investigation. Verbeke's 2026 Yamaha was impounded for a safety and forensic check, a standard procedure in fatal crashes to determine whether mechanical failure contributed. No cause has been attributed to impairment, speed, or road conditions, and the investigation remains open. Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or captured footage on a dash cam to contact the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.

Saturday's death follows a documented pattern of fatal crashes along Wading River Road. In February 2023, Kevin Vollmer, 50, of Huntington Station, and his passenger Antoinette Mullings-Joseph, 49, of Huntington, were both killed when their van left the road and struck a tree at the intersection with North Street. Two months later, Mary Brennen, 40, was killed in a head-on collision elsewhere on the same road. In June 2023, Loraine Dicuffa, 49, died when a BMW making a left turn at South Street struck the northbound Kawasaki motorcycle she was riding as a passenger; her husband Delio Dicuffa, 50, was airlifted with serious injuries.

The stretch passes through Manorville's wooded, low-density terrain, where trees, boulders, and roadside fixtures sit close to the shoulder with little buffer. Three of those four recent fatal crashes on this road, including Verbeke's, involved vehicles leaving the roadway entirely before striking fixed objects.

On Suffolk County's rural roads, narrow lanes and shoulder hazards can appear without warning. Wearing full protective gear on every ride and reducing speed before intersections with compressed sight lines are baseline precautions on corridors like Wading River Road. Left turns across oncoming traffic, the scenario that proved fatal at Wading River Road and South Street in 2023, carry an outsized risk where tree cover limits the view.

The Seventh Squad investigation is ongoing.
