Marcos Marques-Leal, 57, appeared Tuesday in Suffolk First District Court in Central Islip and pleaded not guilty to charges that include second-degree murder after Suffolk County police say his estranged wife, 46-year-old Adriana Barbosa, was found fatally stabbed inside the couple’s Farmingville home on Granny Road.

Suffolk County Sixth Precinct officers responded to a 911 call reporting a disturbance at about 8:15 p.m. on a Thursday in mid-February and arrived at 144 Granny Road, where they discovered Adriana Barbosa suffering from stab wounds. Officers also found Marques-Leal with self-inflicted stab wounds and a teenaged relative injured inside the residence. Barbosa was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Homicide Squad detectives charged Marques-Leal with murder in the second degree, criminal contempt in the first degree and endangering the welfare of a child. At his arraignment in Central Islip, a judge remanded him without bail and issued a temporary order of protection; the case is scheduled to return to court at a later date. Authorities have not released further details about the criminal contempt count or what led up to the attack.

The injured teenage relative, identified by local reporting as the couple’s daughter Kayla, was treated at Stony Brook University Hospital for injuries described as non-life-threatening. Marques-Leal was also treated at a hospital for serious injuries after the incident and remained under guard while hospitalized; police escorted him while he was under guard until his arraignment.

Neighbors described a large emergency response to the road near the family home. Dr. Richard Dark said he saw “blue and red lights, cherries and berries we call them about a dozen to two dozen cars swooping in here at mega speed. Three ambulances. One left early. Probably didn't need it. One left quietly, unfortunately.” Neighbor Benvinda Viera said she was “Veryveryveryshocked. I never have problems with him, very nice people... never have no problems with him.” Dr. Dark added that “I don't know their situation if they ever reached out or something like that. But there are avenues people can go to before it gets to that, that stage.”

In the days after the killing, members of the Farmingville neighborhood and the local Brazilian faith community have rallied around Barbosa’s daughters, Kayla and Kathellen, according to community accounts. Suffolk County detectives continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews as the investigation remains active; officials have not provided a timeline for the next court appearance or released additional investigative details.
