Broadway’s busy mix of walkers, drivers, shoppers and parking maneuvers in Greenlawn is now at the center of a $650,000 safety push, with the Town of Huntington and the Greenlawn Civic Association presenting conceptual improvements at Harborfields Public Library.

The public meeting, held Monday, April 13, gave residents their first look at proposed pedestrian and traffic safety changes for the corridor. Town officials said they worked with the Greenlawn Civic Association and several town departments to develop the plans, and they encouraged comments and feedback before the design moved forward.

For families crossing Broadway, older residents trying to reach stores, and businesses that depend on curb access, the project is aimed at the kind of everyday friction that makes a main street feel unsafe or inconvenient. The town said the improvements were part of a Suffolk County JumpStart Grant, money meant to support downtown revitalization, economic activity, tourism, the arts and small-business recovery after the pandemic.

Suffolk County’s broader JumpStart and JumpSMART grant round totaled nearly $50 million in awards, and Greenlawn’s streetscape work was identified in county reporting as a $650,000 JumpStart allocation. Huntington also received $1.25 million for downtown parking and waterfront improvements, underscoring how the county has tied local infrastructure spending to village and downtown corridors across the town.

The Broadway effort also follows earlier signs that the road remains a safety concern. A separate report last August said phase one of a comprehensive construction project would enhance vehicle, pedestrian and bicyclist safety along Broadway, linking that work to the same grant. In July 2025, News 12 reported a serious crash into a utility pole in front of 315 Broadway, a reminder of how quickly a routine drive through Greenlawn can turn dangerous.

That combination of funding, prior crash history and direct public input has made the meeting more than a presentation. It was a point where residents could still shape how Broadway functions, from where people cross and how cars move to how much room remains for parking and local business access. Once the conceptual plans advance, the details of Greenlawn’s main corridor will be harder to change.
