Mattapan Man Arraigned After Elderly Neighbor Beaten, Phone Stolen
A Mattapan resident, 29-year-old Khalil Muhammad, was arraigned Dec. 31 on charges including assault and battery on a person over 60 and unarmed robbery stemming from an incident on Dec. 22. The case underscores concerns about elder safety, parcel disputes and supervision of defendants with pending cases in Suffolk County.

A Mattapan man was arraigned in Suffolk County court Wednesday after prosecutors say he attacked a 77-year-old neighbor who had gone to his apartment to retrieve an Amazon package that was allegedly misdelivered. Authorities say the confrontation on Dec. 22 escalated into violence when the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Khalil Muhammad, allegedly punched and beat the elderly man, stole his phone and left him with significant facial injuries that required hospital treatment.
Boston police and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office brought the case forward, charging Muhammad with assault and battery on a person over 60 and unarmed robbery. District Attorney Kevin Hayden publicly condemned the violence and emphasized the added seriousness of crimes committed against older residents, according to the DA’s office.
Neighbors who witnessed or arrived at the scene described a grievous injury to the victim and said the attack left the building shaken. The victim was treated at a hospital for facial trauma; police said the stolen phone was taken during the assault. No quotes from witnesses or officials were provided for publication.
At Wednesday’s arraignment prosecutors noted that Muhammad had prior pending cases and unresolved probation issues. Because of those outstanding matters and the nature of the new charges, his bail was revoked and he is being held on a detention detainer pending further proceedings. Court records show the case will proceed in Suffolk County Superior Court, where pretrial and scheduling matters will be set in the coming days.

For local residents the incident raises familiar concerns: disputes over misdelivered packages, the safety of elderly neighbors who may feel compelled to retrieve parcels themselves, and how the criminal justice system manages defendants with active supervision issues. The DA’s heightened focus on elder victims signals prosecutorial willingness to pursue enhanced accountability in cases involving older adults.
Community leaders and public safety officials often urge communication and precaution when parcels are misplaced, and suggest reporting thefts or suspicious conduct to police. The incident in Mattapan will likely prompt renewed attention locally to building security, neighbor mediation and the supervision of individuals on probation while cases are pending in Suffolk County courts.
