Pedestrian Killed by LIRR Train Near Bay Shore Grade Crossing
A pedestrian was struck and killed by an LIRR train near Penataquit Avenue in Bay Shore just before noon Monday, snarling Montauk Branch service for hours.

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road train near the Penataquit Avenue grade crossing in Bay Shore just before noon Monday, triggering hours of cascading delays across the Montauk Branch.
Suffolk County EMTs pronounced the person dead at the scene. MTA spokeswoman Joana Flores said the individual was not authorized to be on the tracks and that no criminality is suspected. The MTA has not released the victim's identity.
The train involved was carrying fewer than 100 passengers and running from Babylon to Speonk when the 11:49 a.m. incident occurred, Flores said. The Montauk Branch train was between the Bay Shore and Islip stations at the time of the collision.

Five trains were significantly disrupted in the aftermath, according to the MTA website. The 2:03 p.m. departure from Speonk to Babylon was canceled outright. The 11:41 a.m. Jamaica-to-Montauk train fell more than two hours behind schedule. The 1:31 p.m. Babylon-to-Speonk service ran approximately 70 minutes late, and the 2:31 p.m. Babylon-to-Patchogue train had still not departed as of 3:30 p.m. Service on part of the Montauk Branch resumed with what the LIRR described as "heavy delays" just before 3 p.m.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not announced when the victim's identity will be released.
