Drivers on the Southern State Parkway can expect a sharper police presence, as New York State Police launched Operation Southern Shield to target the reckless habits tied to the road’s worst crashes. The enforcement effort focused on stretches with a high number of incidents and zeroed in on speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, failing to move over and not buckling up.

State police launched the initiative on April 24, 2026, saying the goal is to cut fatal and serious injury collisions on one of Long Island’s most dangerous highways. The timing followed several major crashes in recent weeks, including a collision on April 13 near Exit 14 in Valley Stream, where a trooper was struck while responding to another crash on the parkway. The case underscored the risk not only to drivers but also to the officers working the corridor.

Captain Vincent Augeri said the roadway’s design does not protect motorists who speed, drink or look away from the road. That message was reinforced by Jawana Richardson, whose husband, Sherman Richardson, was killed in a 2014 drunk-driving crash on the Southern State Parkway. Prior reporting said the driver in that case was high and traveling at nearly 90 mph when he slammed into Richardson’s car.

The parkway’s danger has been documented for years. A 2016 New York State Department of Transportation study cited by lawmakers found more than 10,500 crashes on the Southern State Parkway over five years, including more than 3,000 injury crashes and 32 fatalities. More recently, a 19-year-old driver was killed in a November 2, 2025 crash near the Meadowbrook Parkway exit, another reminder that the corridor continues to produce deadly results.

The latest crackdown also fits into a longer push to address the road’s layout and safety problems. In 2021, state lawmakers introduced a bill to study the Southern State Parkway’s entrance and exit ramps and signage in Nassau and Suffolk counties to reduce collisions and wrong-way driving. The New York State Department of Transportation has also carried out safety projects, including resurfacing and interchange reconstruction work at specific locations.

For Suffolk County commuters, the message is direct: the Southern State Parkway remains under close watch, and the behaviors most likely to draw immediate enforcement are the same ones most likely to cause the next serious crash.
