Stony Brook Adds Pulmonologist Benjamin Berson to Expand Suffolk County Clinics
Stony Brook adds pulmonologist Benjamin Berson to expand access to specialized lung care in Hauppauge, Port Jefferson Station and Riverhead.

Stony Brook Medicine has expanded its community pulmonary services in Suffolk County with the addition of pulmonologist Benjamin Berson, MD, to New York Pulmonary Consultants. The hire is intended to bring more specialized lung care into outpatient clinics in Hauppauge, Port Jefferson Station and Riverhead, reducing the need for some patients to travel to the hospital for advanced diagnostics and procedures.
Dr. Berson is board-certified in internal medicine with subspecialty training in pulmonary and critical care. His clinical interests include bronchoscopic and pleural procedures and the use of ultrasound in pulmonary care. Those skills support diagnosis and treatment for a range of respiratory conditions, from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma to pleural effusions and complex airway disorders. Pulmonary ultrasound and image-guided procedures can shorten appointment times and increase procedural safety in the outpatient setting.
The New York Pulmonary Consultants practice is part of the Stony Brook Medicine Community Medical Group, an effort to grow specialty services closer to where patients live. By staffing community clinics in multiple Suffolk County locations, Stony Brook aims to improve access for residents across the county, including commuters, older adults, and families who may face transportation or scheduling barriers to care at main hospital campuses.
For clinicians, having a pulmonologist with critical care training available in community sites can streamline care coordination between primary care, specialty clinics and hospital teams. For patients, local access to bronchoscopic evaluation and pleural procedures can mean faster diagnosis, fewer clinic-to-hospital referrals, and continuity of care for chronic lung disease. Increasing community-based specialty capacity also has implications for public health planning as the region manages ongoing respiratory disease burdens and post-COVID care needs.
Appointments with New York Pulmonary Consultants are available at the Hauppauge, Port Jefferson Station and Riverhead clinics. Patients who need pulmonary evaluation should contact their primary care provider for referral or reach out to New York Pulmonary Consultants to schedule an appointment at the community clinic nearest them.
Bringing Dr. Benjamin Berson into community practice reflects Stony Brook Medicine’s push to make specialty care more geographically and logistically accessible in Suffolk County. For residents with breathing problems or complex lung conditions, the change means more options closer to home and a greater chance of timely, coordinated care as respiratory needs evolve.
