Suffolk County prosecutors said a breakup turned into a violent home invasion in Patchogue, leaving an ex-girlfriend’s 22-year-old son seriously wounded inside his own bedroom. Robert Schreiber, 42, was indicted May 1 on attempted murder and other charges after authorities said he entered the house through an unlocked window while the family slept, then stabbed the young man seven times in the head, neck and shoulder.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Schreiber had been locked out of the home after his long-term relationship ended on April 17, 2026. Prosecutors said he returned the next morning at about 8 a.m., went straight to the victim’s bedroom and kicked in the door before launching the attack. Family members intervened, called 911 and helped the victim escape down the stairs. He was taken by ambulance to NYU Langone Hospital, where doctors used numerous staples to close the wounds.

Police arrested Schreiber at the scene and recovered the knife used in the attack, prosecutors said. The indictment charges him with attempted murder, first-degree burglary, attempted assault, second-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and harassment. The top count, attempted murder, is a Class B violent felony, and prosecutors said Schreiber faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of that charge.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, who has served in the post since Jan. 1, 2022, cast the case as a warning about how domestic violence can spread beyond a relationship breakup and turn deadly inside the home. “Domestic violence does not always end when a relationship does, it often escalates,” Tierney said. “We will aggressively prosecute this defendant and seek justice for the victim and his family.”

Schreiber was arraigned April 30 before Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins, who set bail at $100,000 cash, $1,000,000 bond or $1,000,000 partially secured bond. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Johanna Poremba of the Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Bureau and investigated by Suffolk County Police Department Fifth Squad Detective Eric Cox. Schreiber is represented by Ira Weissman, Esq., and is due back in court May 28.
