Hundreds of Suffolk County teenagers walked out of the police academy in Brentwood with a prom outfit in hand and a financial burden lifted. At the ninth annual Prom Impact giveaway, Suffolk County police offered free dresses, suits, shoes and accessories for students who might otherwise have faced tuxedo rental bills of $100 to $300 and prom dresses that can run as high as $600.

The event was held at the Suffolk County Police Academy at 1001 Crooked Hill Road in Brentwood. Students were asked to bring a school ID, and the giveaway included prom dresses, tuxedos, shoes, ties, makeup and cologne. Local stores and community members donated the items, turning the academy into a one-day formalwear shop for teens from across the region.

Students from William Floyd and Central Islip were among those looking for something to wear to prom, a night many families still treat as a milestone but one that can easily stretch a household budget. For parents already balancing tuition, sports fees, transportation and everyday living costs, a free dress or tuxedo can make the difference between attending and staying home.

Detective Sgt. Tamika Mays said the point is to make sure students can finish high school feeling good and looking their best. That message has helped shape Prom Impact into more than a clothing drive. Suffolk County Police LGBTQ Society identified the event as part of its effort to promote self-confidence, independence and individuality among high school seniors.

The giveaway also has a long local footprint. Earlier coverage showed the fifth annual event brought more than 1,000 dresses and 300 suits and tuxedos for students to try on and take home, and prior reports described months of donation collecting and volunteer help from court officers. That support has made Prom Impact a countywide effort rather than a simple one-day giveaway.

In Brentwood, that matters. The hamlet has become a recurring hub for youth and family programming, and Prom Impact now fills a practical gap each spring by helping students participate in a rite of passage without putting more strain on family budgets.
