Tractor-trailer fire closes stretch of Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge
A tractor-trailer fire near the old TGI Fridays in Hauppauge shut down a stretch of Veterans Memorial Highway and sent fire crews to protect a busy county corridor.

A tractor-trailer fire near 1440 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge turned a busy Suffolk County roadway into an emergency scene Thursday afternoon, forcing fire crews to move quickly to keep the blaze from spreading beyond the cab and truck.
The fire broke out at about 4 p.m. near the old TGI Fridays, and the truck was already fully involved when Hauppauge Fire Department crews arrived. Officials said the flames appeared to start in the cab while the driver was traveling, a detail that points investigators toward mechanical trouble, engine heat, wiring or another equipment-related problem.
Everyone inside got out safely, and there were no reported injuries. That outcome kept the incident from becoming a casualty event, but it still created a significant disruption on Veterans Memorial Highway, one of central Suffolk’s most important commuter and commercial corridors. The road carries heavy daily traffic past county offices, including the H. Lee Dennison Building at 100 Veterans Memorial Highway, where county business and public services draw workers and visitors throughout the day.
The fire also raised immediate concerns about nearby property and traffic flow. A tractor-trailer blaze in that stretch can threaten vehicles, slow deliveries and force lane changes or delays for drivers moving through Hauppauge’s business district. Even without injuries, a commercial truck fire in that location can ripple across the surrounding area, especially when it happens near one of the county’s main government and office hubs.

The Hauppauge Fire Department, which says it has more than 125 members and operates three fire stations, brought significant local response capability to the scene. Its crews were able to knock the flames down before the fire spread farther, limiting the danger to adjacent businesses and roadside property.
Veterans Memorial Highway has seen other serious incidents involving fire and heavy traffic in recent months. In Smithtown, a five-vehicle crash on March 24 sparked a fire that injured six people, two seriously. In Bohemia, a 41-year-old Hauppauge man, Brian Yost, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after a tractor-trailer crash blocked traffic on the same roadway. Together, the incidents underscore how quickly a stretch of highway built for daily commuting can turn hazardous when large vehicles catch fire or collide.
