Brush fire reported at Youngs Hill and Stagecoach roads in Sunapee
A brush fire at Youngs Hill and Stagecoach roads drew Sunapee firefighters just before 10 a.m., as dry spring winds keep brush-fire danger high.

A brush fire at Youngs Hill Road and Stagecoach Road sent Sunapee firefighters to a roadside intersection just before 10 a.m. Thursday, a spot where even a small blaze can quickly threaten passing traffic and nearby property. The dispatch came in at 9:51 a.m. under call 26-15389-FD.
Officials had not yet released how much land burned, what sparked the fire or whether anyone was hurt. There was also no verified information on evacuations, road closures or mutual aid by late morning, leaving the immediate focus on the first response in a town where fast-moving fires have already tested local crews.
The call came as firefighters across New Hampshire continue to warn that dry, windy stretches can turn brush into fuel in a matter of minutes. State crews have dealt with multiple brush fires during those conditions, and the risk rises quickly when wind pushes flames through dead grass, roadside growth and leaf litter.
Sunapee has seen how disruptive fire can be even when it starts in one building or one yard. In January 2024, a Prospect Hill Road apartment building fire displaced about 25 to 30 people and took about 12 hours to contain. In July 2025, a three-alarm house fire on Upper Bay Road caused no reported injuries. Those incidents underscored how quickly a fire call in town can escalate into a major response for firefighters and neighbors alike.
For homeowners, the practical message is to treat dry, windy days as fire weather. Fire officials have urged caution because conditions can let a brush fire spread faster than people expect, especially near roads, homes and other open areas where dry fuel can catch in an instant. In Sullivan County, where spring cleanup and yard work are getting underway, the difference between routine outdoor activity and a fire response can come down to one stray spark.
