Sunapee Firefighters Contain Chimney Fire on Perkins Pond Road, Structure Spared
Smoke was showing from the chimney when Sunapee Engine 2 pulled up to a Perkins Pond Road residence Thursday afternoon, with New London Ambulance also on scene.

Smoke was already rising from a chimney on Perkins Pond Road when Sunapee Engine 2 rolled up at roughly 1:50 p.m. Thursday, about 13 minutes after the initial call went out for what dispatchers logged as a chimney fire at a private residence.
Sunapee Fire and New London Ambulance were called to the scene at 1:37 p.m. on March 19. Sunapee Fire Department responded alongside mutual-aid partners, with Engine 2 reaching the residence first and immediately reporting smoke showing from the chimney. Firefighters then entered the structure to assess conditions inside.
According to the story title provided by Sunapee Fire Department, crews contained the fire and it did not extend into the structure itself, sparing the home from broader damage. The department had not yet issued a full incident report with confirmation of containment time, damage estimates, or injury details as of publication.
No injuries to occupants or firefighters were reported in the available information, and there was no indication that residents were displaced. The cause of the chimney fire, whether creosote buildup, a flue failure, or another mechanical issue, has not been officially identified.
Chimney fires are among the more common cold-weather emergencies for fire departments across Sullivan County and the Lake Sunapee region, where wood-burning stoves and fireplaces see heavy use through the late winter months. The National Fire Protection Association recommends annual chimney inspections and cleaning by a certified technician to reduce the risk of ignition from accumulated creosote.
Sunapee Fire Department had not released additional details or an official statement as of Friday morning. Residents with questions about fire safety or chimney inspections can contact the department directly.
