Alamayu Lire's 38 Leads Guymon to 77-70 Overtime Win at Liberal

Alamayu Lire scored 38 points and Guymon rallied in overtime to top Liberal 77-70 in Liberal’s gym known as the Big House on Thursday night, Feb. 19. The win pushed Guymon to 3-20 overall while Liberal fell to 1-17.

Guymon jumped out to an 8-1 lead early, but Liberal rallied to a 11-10 edge and the teams were tied 14-14 after one quarter. Liberal built a double-digit advantage in the second, taking a 29-19 lead and later leading 34-25 before Guymon trimmed the margin; halftime score was Liberal 34, Guymon 30.

The third quarter remained tight with Liberal leading 47-41 at one point and holding a 50-49 edge after three. In the fourth, Guymon took control and led 58-52 with 3:18 remaining in regulation. Liberal’s Prince Collins swished a three from the left to give Liberal a 61-58 lead with 1:38 left, but the Redskins failed to score in the final 1:38 and regulation ended tied 61-61.

Overtime belonged to the Tigers. Guymon took 69-63 and 71-64 leads with 2:10 remaining in OT and reached 73-65 before Liberal cut the margin to 73-70 with 40 seconds left. Guymon’s sophomore guard Alamayu Lire was fouled and made both free throws to finish the scoring and secure the 77-70 final.

Juan Diego scored 16 points and was designated the Black Hills Energy Player of the Game for Guymon. Liberal’s Prince Collins finished with a career-high 16, Alan Olvera posted a career-high 11, and James Fieser added 11 for the Redskins.

The matchup was the first meeting between the Guymon Tigers and the Liberal Redskins in three years. “Maybe they should play more often,” wrote Brock Kappelmann of KSCB in his game recap from Thursday night.

The MaxPreps team page also indicates player stats have not been entered by the coach or designated statistician.

Liberal will host Southwestern Heights Friday night at about 7:45 on 1270 and 92.3 FM as the Redskins look to snap their skid while Guymon departs Liberal with a crucial overtime victory.
