Guymon’s boys soccer season ended at home Monday when MacArthur beat the Tigers 3-1 in the opening round of the OSSAA postseason, closing out a spring that had shown real progress but not enough to survive the bracket. The game, listed by Guymon Public Schools as an OSSAA state first-round home match at 5 p.m. on May 4, left the Tigers with nothing scheduled after the final whistle.

The loss landed hard because Guymon had spent much of the season turning Guymon High School into a difficult place for visitors. The Tigers entered the playoffs with a 10-5 record, ranked fourth in 5A District 2, and an 8-1 mark at home. They had also handled several key opponents down the stretch, beating Del City 5-0 on April 24, Classen SAS 1-0 on April 20 and Carl Albert 2-0 on April 7. Willie Garcia’s group had built enough momentum to earn a home playoff date, but not enough to keep the season alive.

MacArthur arrived with its own surge. The Highlanders won for the fifth straight time, improving to 8-8, and carried that rhythm into a matchup that quickly became a season-ending test for Guymon. The Tigers did score once, avoiding a shutout, but one goal was not enough against a MacArthur side that had been tightening up at exactly the right moment, including a 1-0 win at Elgin on April 25.

Guymon’s final record finished at 10-6, a mark that still reflects a successful year even with the abrupt playoff exit. The Tigers stayed in the district race, protected their home court advantage through most of the spring and reached the opening day of the state bracket, which in Classes 5A and 6A was set for May 4 on the home fields of district winners and runners-up. For a program in Texas County, that kind of consistency matters, even when the postseason only lasts one night.

The roster that carried Guymon through the spring included Angel Aguirre, Israel Cruz, Landon Garcia, Ramon Ochoa, Dariel Villa and Daniel Gonzalez, names that will return as part of the next chapter. This postseason ended one round earlier than the Tigers wanted, but it also confirmed that Guymon is no longer simply finishing a schedule. It is winning enough to reach May, and now the next step is turning those regular-season gains into a longer playoff run.
