Crash closes I-84 westbound near La Grande, lane later reopens

A crash west of La Grande shut down westbound Interstate 84 at milepost 254, about 5 miles from town, and closed OR204 as well, briefly cutting one of Union County’s most important travel corridors before the westbound lane reopened.

During the closure, local freight and passenger vehicles were still allowed to move in the area, but commercial motor vehicles were barred from accessing I-84 at that point. That split mattered in a corridor that carries commuters, freight haulers, school traffic and emergency access between La Grande, Island City and the broader Blue Mountain route.

TripCheck, the Oregon Department of Transportation’s live traffic portal, showed why even a short shutdown near La Grande can ripple far beyond the crash scene. On this stretch of I-84, ODOT describes a westbound restricted-traffic segment between Exit 216 near Pendleton and Exit 265 in La Grande, with commercial-truck restrictions farther east when crash or severe-weather conditions force a shutdown. TripCheck also notes a truck closure point as far east as Exit 374 in Ontario because there is no more room for trucks in Baker City or La Grande.

That means a westbound closure near milepost 254 can quickly affect where trucks stage, where drivers can park and how traffic is managed across Union County. Passenger vehicles may be allowed on select freeway sections when conditions warrant, but no commercial trucks are allowed past the truck closure point until the freeway is open.

The immediate impact reaches beyond freight. When westbound I-84 backs up near La Grande, traffic can spill into town and onto streets such as Island Avenue, creating delays for residents trying to cross the county, reach work or make local appointments. Closures on this corridor have also been tied to school travel delays and slower emergency response times when detours or congestion limit access.

ODOT says it maintains crash data for state highways and other roads, but the first line of defense for drivers remains TripCheck, which updates incidents, congestion, closures, weather conditions and commercial vehicle restrictions in real time. For Union County, the takeaway is clear: this stretch of I-84 remains a fragile lifeline, and even a short closure can disrupt movement in both directions well after the lane has reopened.
