A tip about drug activity at a Mitchek Lane property in Elgin led Union County Sheriff's Office deputies to a camper — and to a felony arrest that added to charges Kyra Ashley Johnston was already facing behind bars.

Deputies received information about drug activity at Johnston's home on Mitchek Lane on Monday, according to a release from the Union County Sheriff's Office. Acting on that information, they applied for a search warrant targeting Johnston's camper on the property. When they executed the warrant and went inside, they found what the sheriff's office described as a "substantial" amount of methamphetamine.

Johnston, born October 21, 1988, was no stranger to the Union County Jail at that point. She had already been lodged there on charges of resisting arrest and harassment — offensive physical contact — stemming from a previous Union County Sheriff's Office arrest. Deputies added the new felony possession of methamphetamine charge on top of those pending matters.

The release did not specify the exact weight or quantity of the methamphetamine recovered from the camper, nor did it detail whether the substance had been field-tested or sent to a laboratory for confirmation. No additional suspects were named, and the sheriff's office did not indicate whether further charges, such as possession with intent to distribute, were under consideration based on the amount seized.

The case marks another enforcement action tied to drug activity in Elgin, a small community in the Blue Mountain foothills that falls under the Union County Sheriff's Office jurisdiction east of La Grande. Whether additional charges follow will likely depend on laboratory results and review by the Union County District Attorney's office.
