La Grande High School Wind Ensemble Wins District Title, Heads to State Festival
La Grande's Wind Ensemble topped all ensembles at the Greater Oregon League festival in Pendleton, scoring 83 and 81 to lock up an automatic state berth.

La Grande High School's Wind Ensemble claimed the Greater Oregon League district title in Pendleton on March 18, posting scores of 83 and 81 to earn automatic qualification for the Oregon State Band Festival at Oregon State University in Corvallis this May.
The two-score total cleared the qualification threshold by a significant margin. According to the La Grande School District, a band must receive at least two scores of 75 or higher to advance to state, making the ensemble's marks well above the cutoff. The district named the Wind Ensemble the Greater Oregon League's automatic state qualifier, meaning no further qualifying is required before the Corvallis competition.
Three judges evaluate each band on a combined assessment of quality, balance, blend, technique, and intonation. The scoring system rewards precision across multiple musical dimensions, not a single adjudicator's impression, which makes the Tigers' margin above the threshold notable.
The ensemble's path to state is not unfamiliar territory for the program. In 2022, the Wind Ensemble advanced to the OSAA Class 4A State competition after winning the Greater Oregon League district festival, with sophomore trumpet player Shiloh Lynch describing the preparation behind that run: "A lot of hours go into practice, thinking about it, listening to songs and all the preparation. We listen to each other and, as peers, try to help each other out."

The program's most decorated moment came in 2007, when a 40-member LHS Wind Ensemble won the OSAA state Class 4A band championships at Oregon State University with 292 points, edging runner-up Cascade of Turner by 12.
The La Grande School District announced the latest district title on March 18. The ensemble will travel to Oregon State University in Corvallis in May for the state festival, with an exact competition date not yet confirmed in official announcements.
