Mifflinburg school board suspends rule, clears boys lacrosse team for playoffs
Mifflinburg’s boys lacrosse players got a playoff lifeline when the school board suspended a win-loss rule hours before their District 4 opener.

Mifflinburg boys lacrosse players were cleared to take the field at Selinsgrove High School after the school board suspended a district rule that would have kept the team out of the District 4 playoffs. The decision, announced by board President Tom Eberhart at Tuesday night’s public meeting, gave the Huskies a postseason berth that had been in jeopardy because of their regular-season record.
The regulation the district set aside required athletic teams to finish with a positive win-loss ratio to be eligible for playoffs. That standard would have shut out Mifflinburg, even though the team had qualified for the postseason bracket. By suspending the rule, the district made room for the boys lacrosse team to compete rather than be sidelined by an internal eligibility technicality.

The playoff picture made the stakes clear. PIAA District IV’s boys lacrosse rules say the top four teams in the District IV and District VI sub-region advance to the District IV-VI tournament if they have played at least nine official varsity games. District IV postseason games are played under PIAA rules and district lacrosse committee regulations. In the 2026 Class 2A bracket, Mifflinburg was seeded fourth and was set to face Selinsgrove on May 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Selinsgrove High School.

The numbers show why the board action mattered. MaxPreps listed Mifflinburg’s 2026 boys lacrosse record at 2-7-0, and LaxNumbers showed the same record with 48 goals for and 114 goals against. The schedule included a 12-4 win over Lewisburg on April 23, along with losses to Danville, North Pocono, Selinsgrove, Bellefonte and Dallas.

The ruling gives Mifflinburg’s players a postseason chance that otherwise would have disappeared despite earning the bracket spot. It also sets a practical precedent inside the district: when a standing rule clashes with a team’s playoff qualification, the school board is willing to intervene and decide the matter itself.
