Val Verde Commissioners Court to Address Infrastructure, Personnel, and Surplus Items April 8

Val Verde County's Commissioners Court convenes Tuesday at 9 a.m. with one of its fuller agendas of the spring, taking up personnel appointments, surplus property disposal, and a cluster of infrastructure decisions that stretch from Del Rio's streets to Comstock's athletic facilities.

County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. will preside over the session at the Old County Court-At-Law Building at 207B E. Losoya St. Among the most consequential items is a potential vote to hire a Veterans Officer, a position that would expand the county's direct services to the veteran population in Val Verde. If approved, the hire would represent a new addition to county government's service footprint, not simply a replacement of an existing role.

Personnel matters run throughout the docket. The court will consider multiple deputy clerk appointments alongside resignations carrying specific effective dates, actions that affect staffing levels inside the county clerk's office and carry immediate payroll implications. A separate line item calls for discussion on halting the issuance of certain checks, a procedural action with direct budgetary consequence.

On the property side, commissioners will weigh declaring certain county-owned items as surplus and authorizing their disposition, potentially through public auction. That item connects directly to an auction notice the county posted April 2, signaling that the court's vote Tuesday could set the sale process in motion.

The infrastructure portion of the agenda covers significant ground. Commissioners will discuss a booster pump station and related water study, storage needs tied to the Comstock sports complex, and road and sidewalk work along Cienegas Road. Two additional capital topics round out that section: a proposed gun range and a potential new fire station, both of which remain at the discussion stage but reflect longer-term planning priorities for the county.

County Auditor reports and budget adjustments also appear on the agenda, items that could redirect departmental spending or shift funding toward capital projects before the next full budget cycle.
